This amazing black and white marble was widely used during the Roman empire and later for the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.  After this intensive quarrying period the quarry was abandoned for centuries and when Louis XIV wanted to use Grand Antique for Versailles the quarry could not be found again. Only during the 19th century the quarry was re-discovered and re-opened until the first half of the 20th century, then it was forgotten again.

Now the quarry is again open and active. The marble is characterized by bright white veins on a deep black uniform background which makes it suitable for traditional as well as for modern and contemporary applications.
